I quick-doodled one of my favourite characters from the Lego Battering
Ram / Castle Wall set that my parents gave me when I was 4 or 5 years
young (thank you Mum and Dad!) This archer was taller than the rest
(because of its arrow quiver attachment) Of course I made it look
shiny here, reliving its glory days; it's actually over 25 years old
now, much-loved, wobbly-jointed and non-shiny... but it still makes me
smile. =)

"Ada gigi kat bawah" ('you must have teeth there') - said by delightful Nyonya grandma, when encountering grandchild's pyjama pants with holes at the seam.

So today, the (true) story goes: a person (not to be named) decided to don some purple and grey-striped underthings, and went about the whole corporate workday, before realizing with horror (during a WC break), that there was a large rip in the seam of their nice brown pants, with delightful purple-and-grey stripes showing. -Almost gleefully!

What would it look like if a ripped seam took a gleeful twirl? Perhaps this quick-doodle might be a possibility.

Not quite my regular doodle subject, but why not, just for today.
May your sewing kits always be stocked. :)

A quick doodle for Alleycat Acres' year end thank you cards (microvolunteering via Sparked.com)

Alleycat Acres is 'a 100% volunteer run organization that helps create a network of neighborhood run farms in an effort to (re)connect people, place + produce.

Sparked.com is a 'microvolunteering' site where non-profits and charity organizations post 'challenges' (requests for help), and are matched to volunteers according to the volunteer's skills. E.g. if you're good at presentations, you can choose to participate in a related 'challenge' and volunteer to create a nice presentation needed by a certain non-profit, for free.

I doodled this in response to Alleycat Acres' challenge (request):

We need some fancy new designs for thank you cards that we need to send to our network of donors for their amazing contributions in 2011 (which enabled two farms to grow over 2,000 pounds of food). My friend Fatin has started her own mini-business+passion: making (and selling) macaroons at www.SugarWhips.com - SugarWhips macaroons are delicious because they are not too sweet, and come in interesting flavours; even the macaroon shells have an excellent variety of flavours! Delightfully, she surprised me with some wonderful macaroon flavours! So I did a little doodle (with a photo of the macaroons on the left - the photo doesn't quite do justice to the actual beautiful shades of the macaroons; I think it's my camera settings affecting the colours). Well done on a delicious, well made range of products, and good luck Fatin!

Lotus seed pods

Surprise! Thank you AK for bringing these and teaching me how to eat
the seeds, raw! Tear them out of the pod, bite the green outer skin a
little, pop the yellow seed out, split it in half, discard the green
'heart,' eat the yellow seed like a peanut. As a child I used to help
Grandma pick at the green hearts of each pale yellow seed with a
safety-pin, to ensure the seeds stayed whole. The green parts were
bitter and had to be discarded before boiling the seeds for a healthy
herbal soup. :)

We chop onions, garlic, ginger; seed the chillies, dice tomatoes, cube potates... and then the curries are cooked, the dhall is prepared, the thosai mix is blended. It's a night where we work together to create the flavours of Indian food, especially for Deepavali.

My little niece is a spy! This is a quick-doodle of a shady spy for
her to spy on. Spud the Spy is master of one disguise: he dresses like
a dirty potato! This disguise allows him go unseen during secret
potato pillaging activities. Our only picture of him is below, when we
surprised him at a potato patch. We need to dig up more dirt on this
fellow.

Oh YEAH! It was awesome. Metallica was one of our fave bands as teenagers. To see them live was amazing. We ate pie at Pie Face before the concert. AND we were right up near the stage. Close enough to see Kirk Hammett's fingernails. And Hetfield's neck veins. With only the little guardrail and bodyguards between us and the stage. Close enough to catch the Live Magnetic Tour coffin-shaped guitar picks. :D

Of course you already know this, but it makes it easy to explain to others when asked, "how do you know when to use 'whom' or 'who?'" Too-whit-too-who! :)

When to use who or whom seems to be universally confusing, even to experienced writers.

But before you click the back button, please forbear and be patient. This exploration of who versus whom will be painless. Trust me. There will be no discussion of direct and indirect objects. No figuring out the subject or the object in the sentence. And no one is diagramming anything.

In fact, there's an easy way to tell when you should use who or whom in a sentence. If we had only been taught this in school.

Consider the following sentence:

Who do you consider the best composer?

Should it be who or whom?

Figure it out by turning the sentence around and replacing the who or whom with he or him. If he is wrong, so is who. If him is wrong, so is whom.

Do you consider him the best composer?
Do you consider he the best composer?

Since him is correct, use whom.

Whom do you consider the best composer?

Here's another example:

It was Corelli, you'll find, who composed that piece.

Turning the sentence around, which is correct?

He composed that piece.
Him composed that piece.

Since he is correct, use who in the sentence.

Delighted! It was just a doodle that I submitted. And more delightful to me is the fact that I adore Patti's writing. She also has a blog at www.37days.com - after her in-law was diagnosed with illness and only had 37 days to live, Patti decided to write down what she herself would have done in the same situation - how would she spend her last 37 days, what would she do? When the answers were in hand, she thought, 'why don't I do all this now, when I still have some time with me?' From this, her blog and books have touched many across the world.

Mum's back from Russia, and she actually bought me a balalaika which I
had jokingly asked for. Jokingly! :D Mom rocks! 'You went to the
Metallica concert,' she texted me, 'I'm staying at the hotel in Moscow
where Metallica were VIP guests!' :)

This doodle just happened as something that my hands did when my ears
were listening to something else. The proportion is not quite right and I'm not sure who the person is supposed to represent, but it is after all just a doodle.

I updated an older illustration for the topic 'Old Fashioned' (IllustrationFriday). I was reminded of a collection of old brooches (pins), and porcelain figurines of ladies with white powdered faces and bright rouge, wearing high collars of ruffles and lace. Some were like beautiful puppets, meant to be seen but not heard, with eyes blazing intensely like the gems in their brooches but facial expressions that were controlled to appear regal and refined like a porcelain mask.

5-piece doodle

I bought a white IKEA frame with space for five pictures – 2 months ago. It’s been sitting empty while I make up my mind over what to put in the slots. There are too many photographs that I love. Perhaps a doodle would suffice in the meantime… Something silly and cartoony, but with a message that I like, and some nature, which I love - flowers perhaps, or feet planted firmly in the ground, barefoot on grass… and something music-related, like a guitar plectrum…

I started to draw with no actual final picture in mind. After doodling the first sketch, I remembered a game we used to play as kids: a sheet of paper folded into three, each folded section was marked ‘Head,’ ‘Body’ and ‘Legs.’

The 1st child would draw the head of any creature, fold it so the others could not see, then pass it to the next child who would draw a body of any creature, fold and pass to the last child who would draw the legs. Each person drawing would not know what the previous sketch was. finally the paper would be unfolded to reveal a strange beast, much to the delight of the kids. We’d then try to name this newly discovered creature and add some odd habits of this specis. An example: Chickenus Zebrelephatis:

So I drew five different parts of a self-cartoon (can’t quite call it a self-portrait!), with the phrase ‘Life is beautiful’ (I wanted to add a ‘SO’ butterfly in the 3rd sketch to make it ‘Life is SO beautiful,’ but forgot to do so – I’ll make one in 3D and stick it on later –> done)

You can tell I like that phrase very much, I use it often to remind myself that we are all so very blessed.

Then I stuck it all together and fastened the frame. It resides in my bedroom for the time being. It looks like I’ve been stretched and chopped into five pieces, but it will do for now, until I’ve decided on the photographs I want to feature in this frame… or until it grows on me :)

Life is beautiful.

Just a doodle - I was going to sketch some mushrooms that sprouted in
the tomato bed, but they became the soles of the shoes, and everything
else ended up in this doodle of a girl jumping in a balloon, floating

These are prelim doodles of a concept I was toying with, as we both
play the guitar, which one strums on the guitar strings using a pick
(or plectrum).

Coconut shell Kalimba

We dropped by the Jadi Batek Factory just to have a look. Besides
batik products, there were also souvenirs ranging from Malaysian
handicraft, right to Russian nesting dolls (?!) , Javanese masks, Thai
incense sticks, and African musical instruments. One that I found
interesting was the Kalimba (thumb piano), made from a half coconut
shell, wood, and metal tines - when plucked, the tines produced minor
tones reminiscient of Gamelan music. Cute! Here's a quick doodle.

Ducks

I went to Dad’s room and something caught my eye. There on his desk was a painting propped up on its frame. It made me smile – when I was 14, I had painted these ducks and I had given it to Dad, at the same time shy (‘what if he didn’t like it?’) and proud (I hoped it was good enough).
Dad brought it to his office where it sat proudly – perhaps to his colleagues it was just a clumsy watercolour, easily overlooked, but to Daddy, ‘my daughter painted it for me.’ =)

It’s Dad’s birthday today. My childhood hero is past 60 years now; something I would have never imagined at 14. When you’re 14, ‘Dad’ is the strapping tall man who loved deep sea fishing, worked too hard, fixed anything that needed fixing, played a competitive round of golf, and loved his family fiercely. He could do anything he set his mind to. In fact, perhaps this hasn’t changed with time at all :)
Today, it warmed my heart to know that this painting made its way back home when Dad retired, yet still remains at a special place. Happy Birthday Dad, with much love – we are all so proud of all that you are.

Tangled breeze doodle

I had my fountain pen in my hand and a blank sheet of paper on the table. The lines intertwined, tangled and formed an image. Just a doodle.
Haven’t decided what to do to complete it yet. Perhaps it’s meant to just be this way. For now.

Circle

The puppy who just wants to love you. He’s so full of affection, I only learnt later that he was disabled. He was born with a very soft skull, and he is blind, deaf and doesn’t posses a good sense of smell like other dogs do. They named him Circle because he can’t walk in a straight line; his sense of balance is also affected. I wanted to adopt him, this little dog at the pet store.

Sadly, Circle passed away at just 5 months of age. He had such challenges in life, but still was able to offer such generous affection.

We sometimes take things for granted – our abilities, talents, health… all these are gifts awarded to us, and can be revoked at any time. It would be a waste not have fully used these gifts and to look back with regret at the things one could have and should have done.

Live, love and laugh. Life is beautiful.

I love Penang. I’ve many years of memories made in Penang. But now I am in Penang during the AH1N1 influenza season. I’m seated beside a sneezing man. Outside I’m calm but in my mind I can’t help an inner ‘eek-don’t-infect-me’ scream, like Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ painting.

PS: A friend had a Facebook update (TQ, Vic):

‘A note was observed attached to Edvard Munch's painting entitled "The Scream" in the National Gallery of Oslo. The note succinctly described the artist: "Edvard! You veirdo you!"

But I didn’t know, see… then I met a Dutch gentleman… “How nice, you’re a Cloggie,” I smiled… He was highly offended – he said only peasant farmers wore clogs then… I called an Englishman a Pommie…! Oh, such trouble I got into, learning English from the Aussies…”

Pizza

Quick doodle of Toto's Pizza and hot Cappuccino. The walls are decorated with framed old art deco prints, the leather chairs have brass tacks. The pizza is thin-based, crispy, cheesy and hot.

Gelato

Gelato at Il Dolce Freddo on Lygon St. Try the Ferrero Rocher and Raspberry flavours together on a chilly night. They even have Durian gelato.

The doodle started with the figure on the left.

"Aw, where am I?" he asked.

I'm interested in street art designs now after seeing so many laneways decorated with legal graffiti commissioned by the Melbourne city council.

Last year's Winter in Williamstown

Pencil sketch from 2008; lying on the green green grass of Williamstown, beneath the towering elm trees.

Planned to journey there again this Summer. River cruise ferry ran out of fuel after crossing the Yarra banks.

The grass is probably not as green at Williamstown this hot Summer season anyhow.

Lightning does strike twice, he said.

Today we met a man who has survived being struck by lightning -not once, but twice! "The second time it happened," he said, "it was raining, so I was holding an umbrella. There was a sudden flash of light and I felt like I had been thrown in the air... I could smell something like hair being burnt... then I figured out it was MY hair! Luckily I didn't suffer from severe burns - except for a small burn mark on the part of my thumb that was in contact with the umbrella pole."

(I'm not standing next to him on a rainy day, even though he is a very nice person!) ;)
